In Early 2020, Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) has accepted the 400th orangutan since the center was founded in 2020. The orangutan is a male who is estimated to be 3 years old was confiscated from Kutacane, Aceh Southeast. The orangutan was confiscated by Conservation and Natural Resources (BKSDA) Aceh from a resident in Kutacane Aceh. Until the second week of January 2020, the number of orangutans that have been received at the SOCP’s Orangutan Quarantine and Rehabilitation Center has now reached 401.
These orangutans are confiscated by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry through Conservation and Natural Resources (BKSDA), from illegal pets or wildlife trade. The continued arrivals of orangutans at our Centre indicates that orangutans are still being regularly displaced from their forest habitats.

At the SOCP’s Quarantine and Rehabilitation Center we always provide the best care for every orangutan who arrives. Some arrive with poor health and some are still babies who vulnerable and very dependent on their mothers. This is a challenge for us to be able to prepare and ensure these orangutans can survive when they will return to the rain forest.
